ADA Handrail Requirements We Build To
Every hand railing we install meets or exceeds these ADA standards:
- Handrail height: 34–38 inches above walking surface
- Graspable profile: 1.25–2 inch circular cross-section
- 12-inch minimum extension at top and bottom of stairs
- Continuous handrail — no breaks or obstructions
- Non-slip surface finish required
- Must support 250 lbs of concentrated load
- Ramp railings on both sides when rise exceeds 6 inches
- Pool gates: self-closing & self-latching at 54 inches minimum
ADA Fencing & Gate Requirements
Key ADA requirements for fencing and gates that every commercial property must meet:
Clear Path & Width
Fences must not obstruct accessible paths. Gates along these routes must provide a clear opening of at least 32 inches when fully open.
Hardware & Latching
Gate latches, handles, and locks must be operable with one hand and require no tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist.
Opening Force
The force required to open the gate should be as minimal as possible, generally not exceeding 5 pounds.
Cane Detection
For temporary construction fences or borders guiding pedestrians with visual impairments, the bottom 3 inches of the fence must be solid to allow for safe cane detection.
Protruding Objects
Any fence parts, gates, or handrail extensions extending into a pedestrian path cannot have sharp edges or protrude more than 4 inches into the walkway.
