Fence Installation FAQ

Permits, costs, materials, HOA rules, hurricane damage, pool code — the most common questions we hear from Martin and Palm Beach County homeowners.

Permits & Regulations

Do I need a permit for a fence in Martin County, FL?+

Yes — Martin County requires a building permit for all new fence installations. The permit ensures the fence meets setback requirements, height limits (typically 4′ in front yards, 6′ in rear yards), and Florida Building Code wind-load standards. We pull the permit as part of every job.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Palm Beach County, FL?+

Yes — Palm Beach County also requires a fence permit. Many municipalities within the county (West Palm Beach, Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Boca Raton) have their own additional requirements. We handle the permit submission for your specific jurisdiction.

What’s the maximum fence height allowed?+

Most Martin and Palm Beach County jurisdictions allow up to 6′ in rear and side yards, and 4′ in front yards. Corner lots and waterfront lots often have additional restrictions. HOA covenants may further restrict height.

Are there setback requirements from the property line?+

Yes — most jurisdictions require fences to be set back at least 6″ from the property line. Corner lots often have additional sight-triangle restrictions at intersections.

Does my HOA need to approve the fence?+

Almost always, yes. Most South Florida HOAs require approval of fence style, material, color, and height before installation. We package and submit the HOA approval request as part of every residential job.

What is the Florida Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act?+

Section 515 of the Florida Statutes requires every residential pool to have a barrier (fence) at least 48″ high, with no opening larger than a 4″ sphere, and self-closing self-latching gates with the latch 54″+ above grade. Pool fence installations require a separate inspection.

Materials & Selection

What’s the best fence material for South Florida?+

Powder-coated aluminum is the most popular choice for most homeowners — maintenance-free, salt-tolerant, hurricane-engineered. Vinyl/PVC is best for solid privacy. Wood is the highest-maintenance and shortest-life option in Florida.

What’s the difference between aluminum and welded aluminum?+

Standard aluminum fence panels are rackable — pickets slide through punched rails and are pinned. Welded aluminum has every picket fusion-welded to the rails at our shop, producing a stronger one-piece panel with no visible fasteners and a more architectural look.

Vinyl vs PVC — are they the same?+

Yes — in the fence industry, vinyl and PVC are used interchangeably. Both refer to fence systems made of polyvinyl chloride compound.

Why do my old metal fence posts rust?+

Most rust comes from painted zinc hardware, undersized galvanizing, or steel posts that got installed too close to salt air. We install with stainless or hot-dip galvanized hardware and aluminum posts to eliminate the common rust problem.

Can a chain-link fence be used for a pool?+

No — standard chain-link mesh openings are larger than the 4″ sphere limit required by Florida pool code. Aluminum, PVC, or vinyl are the correct choices for pool barriers.

Do you install wood fences?+

Yes — cedar board-on-board and shadow-box styles. We’ll be honest that wood is the highest-maintenance fence in Florida. Aluminum or vinyl typically wins on lifetime cost.

Pricing & Process

How much does fence installation cost?+

Material and style drive the price. Chain-link runs $18–$35 per linear foot installed. Aluminum runs $35–$70. Vinyl/PVC runs $30–$65. Welded aluminum and glass run significantly higher. Gates add $400–$1,800+ depending on type. Minimum project is $750. Use our live cost estimator for an instant ballpark.

What’s your minimum project size?+

$750 minimum for any new install or repair. This covers truck roll, crew time, permit cost, and overhead on small jobs.

Do you require a deposit?+

Yes — 50% deposit to schedule, balance due on completion. Standard for the industry.

Do you offer discounts?+

Yes — 5% discount for active-duty military, veterans, and cash payment.

What’s your typical turnaround time?+

Most residential projects go from contract to final inspection in 3–4 weeks, including permit and HOA approval times. Storm-damage repairs can sometimes run faster when we have crew availability.

Do you offer financing?+

Yes — we partner with consumer financing programs. See our financing page for details and links to apply.

Hurricanes, Damage & Repair

Can my fence survive a hurricane?+

A properly installed fence — concrete-set posts, correct spacing, reinforced corners and gate posts, marine-grade hardware — typically survives Florida storms. Most fence failures in hurricanes are shortcut installations: sand-set posts, undersized footings, or improper picket-to-rail attachment.

Do you repair fences after hurricane damage?+

Yes — we run a dedicated repair crew. After major storms we extend hours and prioritize containment failures (children/pets at risk) over cosmetic damage.

Does homeowners insurance cover fence damage?+

Most policies cover hurricane and storm damage to fencing (subject to your deductible). We provide the documentation needed for your insurance adjuster.

Will you repair a fence you didn’t install?+

Yes — any material, any brand, anywhere in our service area. We service all major gate operator brands too.
